WHO AM I?

Environment = identity

“You are a collection of constantly changing parts: your physical body, mind, emotions, circumstances, and even your quirks, always changing, but still in an amazing and illogical way, you stay the same, too.”

– Amy Adkins

People’s identities are constantly changing due to their environment and interactions. Amy Adkins explains how every human is a conglomeration of characteristics collected and discarded throughout our lifetime. With all these “changing parts,” as Adkins puts it, we can lose track of who we actually are throughout this process. What keeps us who we are? The title, “Who am I?” reflects this human query as it exposes the uncertainty and mystery of human consciousness and thinking. There are three pieces of 3D typography art situated throughout my school. Each piece has a significant location and medium that reflects a certain aspect of the environment that is changing our identity and making us wonder who our true self is.

I am KNOWLEDGE.

This portion of the Who am I? art installation responds to the question with the answer, “I am Knowledge.”

This art piece, situated in the school close to classrooms and lockers, illustrates how knowledge and learning are part of our identity and change how we view the world. The serif font represents professionalism, wisdom, and experience; all traits students collect throughout their education. The “shadow” cast on the floor represents how our identity influences our environment through our work.

I am a WOMAN.

This portion of the Who am I? art installation responds to the question with the answer, “I am a woman.” This art piece, situated in the girls’ bathroom where girls often fix their hair, clothes, and makeup, illustrates how clothes and our appearance express a part of our identity. The contrasting colors and patterns represent the constant flux of adolescent identity represented in clothing. It also ties back to the deeper societal pressures on girls to tame and tend to their appearance because their appearance plays a significant role in their identity and how others see them.

I am an ARTIST.

This portion of the Who am I? art installation responds to the question with the answer, “I am an Artist.” This art piece, situated in the fine arts building, illustrates how creativity and the arts are part of our identity and change how we view the world. The wood structures built into letters represent creation and how creating and experiencing art can help us reflect on ourselves and our identity.
