ODE TO HOUSTON

Culture is the salsa on my tortilla chips.

In early 2022, my family was very close to moving back to Ireland to live a simple life on a large farm. We were tired of the politics and tension in the United States and wanted an escape. We had been excitedly looking for a house for years and finally found the one. After touring it and already devising plans for the move, I realized this move wasn’t something I wanted to do after all. Though the escape seemed like a stress free dream, I started to imagine lack of opportunities I would have in a rural, mostly white, environment. I realized the exposure to culture, creativity, and enlightening educational experiences is something I had taken for granted in Houston. My family has a strong community and network of artists, activists, and intellectuals in this city and I didn’t want to leave it all behind. Additionally, I felt as though the activism work I had been working on since elementary would be all for nothing. Like I was giving up on my vision for a greener city. This poetry film is in response to this realization and I hope it sends a message to others not to take the opportunities and environments they have for granted even through these hard and polarized times.
